Splendor in the Grass: A Small Miracle That Turned Bored Grandchildren Into Backyard Explorers

Tiny seedling pushing through soil — a small miracle in a backyard

I was reminded last week how the smallest moment in nature can transform an uncomfortable situation.

You know the one: bored children at an adult event.

If you can’t send them to another room to watch a show or hand them a tablet to keep them occupied, things can become a little tense. There was a time in our lives when gatherings were lively with the children of our friends. Our kids played together while the adults enjoyed the freedom of conversation with neighbors, colleagues, family, and friends.

As grandparents, those moments are rarer. We often find ourselves at events where there are no other grandchildren to help entertain our own.

That’s exactly what happened at an outdoor music gathering I attended recently, where the average age was somewhere around sixty-five.

One couple had brought their grandchildren along to hear the music. For the first thirty minutes, the children listened politely and attentively. But after a while, I could see the familiar signs of restlessness beginning to appear. There were no toys, no inside space to retreat to, no screens to absorb their attention. Just a beautiful afternoon and a lawn full of grown-ups enjoying the music.

I could feel both the children’s boredom and the grandparents’ quiet worry about the distraction that might follow.

Then the granddaughter approached me with great seriousness.

“There’s a cactus growing on the lawn,” she said.

A cactus seemed rather unlikely where we were, but I asked her to show me.

What she proudly led me to was a small upright sprout of ivy pushing its way up through the earth. And I have to admit, in its tiny determination, it did resemble a cactus just a little.

It may not sound like a remarkable discovery, but I encouraged her—and soon her brother joined us—to think about how hard that little stem must have worked to push its way up through the soil.

Amid the live music, the laughter, and the hum of conversation around us, the three of us spent the next hour creating a small sanctuary for this tiny miracle of life.

We gathered sticks and stones and built a little protective circle around the fragile sprout, honoring its resilience and its quiet determination to grow.

I still heard the music. I still heard my friends talking and laughing. I was still present at the gathering.

But I was also present in the lives of two curious young explorers who had discovered a tiny treasure beneath their feet.

It didn’t take botanical knowledge or a horticultural degree to recognize the wonder in that tiny plant.

It only took curiosity, a little imagination, and the willingness to pause long enough to notice.

Later, their grandparents told me the children talked all the way home about that small plant—about how it might have grown from a seed, how its roots connected beneath the soil, and how everything in nature is somehow linked together.

They were thrilled by their discovery.

I felt deeply honored to have shared that moment with them.

And I know one thing for certain.

They would never have gone home that excited about anything they might have found on a screen.

That moment right there in the grass, beside a stubborn little sprout, is what Once Upon a Backyard means to me

If you’ve ever witnessed a small miracle in your own backyard, I’d love to hear about it.

  1. Love this❤️. I’m sure the time those two kids spent protecting that small piece of nature will never be forgotten by them. So kind of you to gift them with this experience.
